Highlights

  • English-born author Samuel Butler’s 1872 novel Erewhon satirizes Victorian society, and was set in a fictional land whose name, read backwards, almost spells ‘Nowhere’. Erewhon is clearly inspired by New Zealand, where Butler spent some of his youth. An accompanying map shows his fictional settlements (some of which we’ve included) overlaid onto the topography of South Island.
